ABOUT THE BOOK: At a time when uncertainty threatens the world, Roberta Rogow’s newest nonfiction book delivers songs that dare Earth’s citizens to march into a hopeful future. Songs of Space presents satirical parodies and inspiring songs about space history, exploration, and speculation. Rogow, a talented musician and singer, is well known for her over 50 years of creating and singing filk songs, the genre of science fiction music. Songs of Space appeals to everyone who loves to sing. Teachers may use these songs as a fun way to teach schoolkids about Earth’s solar system, the history of the space program with its successes and failures, and speculation about possible alien visits. People who love karaoke and singing can sing the songs anywhere—in school, in their car, their house, the store, or in groups they create.
ADVANCE PRAISE: Roy Pettis, former National Intelligence Manager for Space at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, says, “I’ve played tapes of space filk to engineering teams on those long nights when you have to fix something or miss your launch window. They always get cheers and discussion and eventually sing-alongs because they capture our hopes and our reasons for being in the business.”
Gary McGath, author of Tomorrow’s Songs Today: The History of Filk Music, says, “Space is big, and our knowledge of it keeps growing. Sometimes what we learn is exciting, sometimes it’s depressing. Either way, it can make a good song, and Roberta knows how to do it.”
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2013, Roberta Rogow has written numerous science fiction and mystery novels, short stories, nonfiction books, and the lyrics and music for many filk songs, some of which she performs on YouTube. She’s appeared in off-off Broadway productions and children’s theater. She has a master’s degree in library science and worked as a children’s librarian. She lives in Irvington, NJ, is a widow, has two daughters, and a grandson. Her daughter Louise and grandson Will are frequently seen at regional science fiction and gaming conventions, where she enjoys steampunking and he haunts the gaming room.
